FAQ

Q: How can a traveler, equipped with an EcoTrigger and having a subscriber account with Eco123 service, make low-cost international calls when traveling in anyone of the 173 countries where the EcoTrigger signaling service is available?

A: For ease of illustration and reference, we shall consider the following scenario involving the named individuals and country of visit:

John, the traveler who is resident in Canada, is on a 2-day short visit to Mexico with ABC-Co where he has pre-scheduled business meetings with Carlos.

John always has an EcoTrigger with him when he travels abroad.

During a business meeting, John finds it necessary to call back to his head office in Canada to speak with Peter for some advice.

John could but he would not want to use his mobile handset equipped with a SIM issued by Rogers (the Canadian GSM operator) as it would cost US$2.50 per minute for calling from Mexico to Canada using the roaming service.

Also he could but he would not want to use ABC-Co’s facility to make the international call at ABC-Co’s expense.

That’s because he has a much better way for making the call by making use of EcoTrigger supported by Eco123 service. He makes the call as follows:

John first asks Carlos for his consent to letting him receive a call on his (Carlos’) mobile handset –  Note that receiving an incoming call in Mexico is free of charge.

He then dials on his EcoTrigger

+ 554535310321 * 14162259876 and presses SEND

(Note that 554535310321 is the mobile number of Carlos's mobile handset and 14162259876
is the telephone number of Peter in Canada)

A signal is sent through the local GSM operator in Mexico that supports the EcoTrigger service and then through the global GSM network to tell Eco123 service platform to make 2 calls: One to 554535310321 and the other to 14162259876 and then connect the 2 calls at Eco123 service platform to enable a conversation to take place between Carlos's mobile handset and Peter’s telephone.

When Carlos’s mobile handset rings, he hands it over to John and John will hear the ringback tone that tells him that the call is ringing through to Peter’s telephone number.

Note the following important points:

  1. Carlos’s mobile handset needs not be a GSM handset – it can be any mobile handset  CDMA, EVDO, HSDPA, etc.
  2. The telephone service is a reliable high-quality service provided by Eco123 at very low rate. Refer to the rate calculator  at www.ecotrigger.com
  3. The above-described operation would work for anyone who travels in any of the 173 countries where the EcoTrigger signaling service is available
  4. Another great advantage offered by EcoTrigger/Eco123 is the convenience and time-saving benefits. A business traveler on a short business trip really cannot afford to spend time to go find a local mobile operator retail outlet to buy a prepaid SIM in order to make telephone calls without incurring the exorbitant roaming charges.

Besides being time-consuming, there is also the consideration for cost.  A minimum cost for a local Prepaid Calling Card may be US$10 – clearly it would not make good sense for you to spend US$10 for the card if all you want to do is to have a 3 minute conversation.

Q: If the EcoTrigger/Eco123 solution/service good only for use when travelling abroad?

A: No. EcoTrigger/Eco123 solution/service is good for use to enable you to achieve great savings in making any international calls even when you are not traveling abroad.

You may use a high-end mobile handset such as BlackBerry, Treo Smartphone and/or iPhone for all the advantages that these devices offer but you should certainly want to use EcoTrigger/Eco123 solution/service  to save on the costs when you make international calls.

To use EcoTrigger/Eco123 to make international calls in such a case, you would dial your international telephone number in the following manner:

Dial +<telephone number of your BlackBerry or Treo or iPhone>*<the international telephone number to call> and press SEND.

When the BlackBerry/Treo/iPhone rings, you answer it, and you will hear the ringback tone that tells you that the call is ringing through to the international telephone number that you want to reach.

Q: Is there a short-cut to dialing and signaling EcoTrigger/Eco123 to make an international call?

A: Yes. There is. You can simplify the dialing sequence by omitting the

<telephone number of your BlackBerry or Treo or iPhone> *

and simply dial

+ <the international telephone number to call>

if you want to use the same BlackBerry or Treo or iPhone to to speak to the party at the international telephone number.

Note that the EcoTrigger/Eco123 service platform has the smarts to know that if you (the user of the service) do not specifiy <telephone number of your BlackBerry or Treo or iPhone> *  in the signaling data string, it simply assumes that you want to use the previously-advised device/telephone number to receive the telephone call to speak with the party to be called.
